Marriage became the chief means for women to achieve a place in society. The eccentric and seemingly unintelligent Mrs. Bennett does her best to engage herself in her daughter's love affairs interference in the girls' lives and obsession with their marriage is consistent throughout the novel, and similar traits can be found in Bridget Jones's mother. She constantly worries about Bridget's marital status as a single thirty-two year old, and fears she will remain unmarried for the rest of her life and even attempts to set her up with young men and sons of friends. ...
